Pizza Taste-Off Results Are IN!

Teens were challenged this summer to participate in a blind taste-test to determine which pizzeria in Canandaigua has Best Cheese, Best Sauce, Best Crust, and Best Overall Taste. As always, it was a very tough decision, but a few reigned supreme. Congratulations to the following local pizzerias:

Be a part of the fun! Whether you're a seasoned actor and need to keep your acting skills sharp over the summer, or a novice performer who would like to have a taste of acting, Teen Theater is for you! Perform a play written by teens and work with Canandaigua Academy Drama teacher Scott Schauman to bring it to life! Rehearsals take place from July 11-22. Can’t get enough of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan? In this second part of the geocaching series, participants will learn how to use a GPS unit to search for clues in a Lightning Thief-themed geocaching adventure on the library property by answering trivia questions. Teen Cache Bash - Tuesday, July 19, 6:00-8:00 PM
Get out and find hidden treasures in downtown Canandaigua! After an introduction on geocaching and learning how to use a GPS unit, participants will team up and explore downtown Canandaigua in search of caches hidden right under their noses. The search will end at the City Pier with all participants receiving a free ice cream cone! Registration and permission slip required.

Stuck in the Middle Book Discussion Group - Wednesdays, July 6 & July 20, 6:30 PM

Michael Albert has been making art since his college days at NYU. After 7 years of drawing, he began an exploration in collage, using materials that no longer have any use, like cereal boxes and other empty packages. He now has a collection of over 500 cereal box collages that he calls “Cerealism” and wants to show you how to do it! If you like art, this is for you! Supplies will be provided. All ages welcome. Pizza Pizza!

The results are in! Close to 50 teens put their taste-buds to the test and carefully sampled 8 pizzas from local pizzerias. Pudgie's Pizza ran away with the competition taking all four categories - best cheese, best crust, best sauce, and best overall taste - but did tie with Domino's for best crust. Make a Wish {Blow a Kiss}

Nonliving gusts give life to lifeless flora, dispersing diminutive seeds like little

parachutes. Once attached to a safe and known identity, now propelled into a journey of

flight, their destination remains unknown. Alone and vulnerable, some never make it.

Some safely land, establishing roots and a presence.

In the absence of a mother

they are nurtured by nature.

Light and water give them life without living.

The sun gives yet loses nothing.

It returns day after day never to die;

said to be finite, seemingly limitless.

The seeds of future generations, whisked away by the wind because their mother is past

her days when although not wanted, at least had beauty.

Now grey, weak, and helpless, she has

no importance,

no more influence,

no more power then a young and tender human mother forced by an unforgiving society to

give her newborn child into unfamiliar hands.

The woman gives life not unlike the flower.

Each powerless-

Each aching from a loss-

they are equals.

But if they are equals then how can a woman pluck the remaining life from a flower

when a flower can’t take that same gift from her?

It is because of size; the woman towered above the undersized flower which stood without

chance.

But if that were true, then a trivial worm would not be able to harm a woman. However, it

can eat her away, piece by piece, from the inside out until her heart no longer beats and

her blood no longer flows.

Then it is because of strength; the woman dispatched the flower with ease.

But if that were true then an ape would come out victorious in a battle of strength against

a beetle. Yet somehow the beetle can carry ten times its weight for miles, while the ape

moves not a step.

Then if not because of size or strength, how can she do it?

How can she be so insensitive?

Is it fair to take the seeds away from their realm of safety; away from their giver of life,

and sacrifice them for a false hope of certainty?

I may not be fair but the girl is innocent, wishing only to meet her mother for the first

time.

How could she know that with each wish a seed surrenders?

So she closes her eyes, picturing a grow woman, a version of herself.

She wonders if the woman is real, if they will ever reunite.

She thinks her wish, blows a kiss, never to know where it will go.

I look upon them,

Time

I see him lying on the bed I sit next to,

He holds my hand as I stroke his.

As I look into his deep brown eyes,

the only thing that hasn’t changed,

I ask if he remembers the first day we met.

When he says, “no,” I feel one of my last tears slide out of my bloodshot eye,

down my wrinkled cheek,

and over my faded lips.

It makes him forget.

It is my enemy…

I tell him that when I was nine and he was ten, I was at the pier fishing with my dog.

My line got a knot in it, and in the process of fixing it, I got tangled up, and fell into the deep water of the lake.

I couldn’t swim.

I couldn’t breathe.

I saw a light, and then it faded to darkness.

I woke to his face lying in the fresh grass beside me.

It made sure he was there.

It saved my life.

It was my friend…

I turn to his eyes again.

They make another tear fall, and follow the same path as the first.

The tear reminds me what time had been like…

could have been like…

should have been like…

Now focusing on his face, I hope to see one with some recollection of this joyous memory.

All I see is a face like my dog’s- his eyes large and melancholy, his nose scrunched up, and his head cocked to the side.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion, 151 Charlotte St., CanandaiguaAs the official kick-off for The Big Read, historic Sonnenberg Mansion is the perfect place for a masquerade ball to honor Edgar Allan Poe! The lights will dim as dramatic readings of Poe’s major works, including “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” are chillingly delivered by state officials and other community members to a captivated audience. Students from Canandaigua Academy’s Drama Department will play Poe’s troubled characters including Fortunato, Roderick Usher, and Prince Prospero, and Poe himself will make an appearance. Guests will be challenged to guess the characters and Poe’s stories or poems. Costumes will be judged and prizes awarded. Teens and adults are invited to this ticketed, catered event. Tickets can be purchased at Wood Library for $8/person. RSVP by September 30.

A Writer’s Nightmare: Teen Horror Writing Workshop
Tuesdays in October, 6:30-8:00 PM

Main St., CanandaiguaTeens can perfect their horror writing skills with John Michalko, Special Projects Teacher at Canandaigua Middle School, as they look at popular horror writers from the past and present and discuss what creates a truly horrifying read. Poe Panel Discussion

Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., CanandaiguaWood Library will host a discussion surrounding the stories and poetry, the author, the history, and the dark themes of Edgar Allan Poe. Kathi Nacca, retired Canandaigua Academy English Teacher and Wood Library employee, will moderate a panel of Poe experts as they discuss “The Bells,” “The Raven,” and a selection of short stories. Panel speakers include Sam Martina, Scott Schauman, and Bob Burns. Students studying the work for the first time and adults revisiting it are encouraged to join in the discussion. Free and open to all ages.

A Midnight Dreary: Tales of Edgar Allan Poe

Veterans Hospital, 400 Fort Hill Ave., CanandaiguaBristol Valley Theatre collaborates with Wood Library and The Big Read to celebrate the 200th birthday of America's Master of the Macabre, in a dramatic performance of Edgar Allan Poe's most haunting tales, featuring BVT’s Artistic Director Karin Bowersock and local actor Jim Ditmars. Ditmars has been with Bristol Valley Theater since 1995 and is no stranger to dramatic macabre. He has appeared in “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Corpse!,” and the world premiere of “Nevermore.” Students from Canandaigua Academy will grace the stage and treat the audience to period Gothic choral pieces. Performances are free and open to the public. The event will be held at the Veteran's Administration Auditorium in Building #5. Parking nearby.

Photos will be judged by Rikki Van Camp, photo journalist from Messenger Post Newspapers, Peter Blackwood, freelance photographer, and Canandaigua Middle School Art Teacher, Sally McKenna. Photos will be judged on overall photographic and artistic quality. Traditional photography as well as digitally altered images are allowed. The High Strung - Monday, June 30, 7:00 PM

lyrical bravado. This year the guitars that accompany the band’s catchy sing-along choruses are roaming the country again and are headed to Wood Library on Tuesday, June 30 at 7 PM. In addition to playing a full-set of their rousing Beatles-esque jams, concert goers will learn what
it’s like to tour year-round and what sort of enthusiasm it takes to maintain such faith in your art. With a new album coming out on Park the Van Records in spring 2009, The High Strung will perform a mix of favorites and new tunes, as well as writing and performing a new song at the library with the help of the audience. All ages welcome to attend. This organization is supported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, which is administered locally by Phelps Historical Society & Phelps Arts Center. This month, teens will be reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, a story about Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant working in Chicago’s infamous Packingtown. Instead of finding the American Dream, Rudkus and his family inhabit a brutal, soul-crushing urban jungle dominated by greedy bosses, pitiless con-men, and corrupt politicians.
