Formally known as the Teen Bake-Off, Canandaigua's most famous baking contest is back for its 3rd year! The stakes are higher because this time around, the mission is to bake the best darn BROWNIES Canandaigua has ever tasted! On Saturday, January 17, bring your tried-and-true brownies (must be pre-cut) to Wood Library with copies of the recipe*. Judges from Buttercups Bakery, Wegmans Bakery, and the New York Wine and Culinary Center will be on-hand to taste the entries and decide who should be voted the best teen baker of 2009 based on taste, texture, flavor, and presentation. A batch of brownies could win you a $50 gift certificate to Williams Sonoma, a $25 gift card to Wegmans, or a $10 gift certificate to Buttercups Bakery! Judging begins at 12 noon and all bakers must be present. Once judging is complete, family and friends are welcome to sample the competing brownies. *Recipes will be sold for a donation to help support Wood Library. A special thank-you to Wegmans and Buttercups Bakery for donating the prizes! Registration required. Contact Jenny Goodemote at 394-1381 or jgoodemote@pls-net.org for more information.

Teen Read Week is here!
October 12-18

What is Teen Read Week? Wood Library would like you to just read for the fun of it. Forget about tv, computers, and games, and pick up a book you've been meaning to read for awhile. If you need help finding the perfect book to get you started, check out some of these:

Fever 1793 - Laurie Halse Anderson. Sixteen-year-old Mattie Cook flees her Philadelphia home during the yellow fever outbreak of 1793.

Tiger, Tiger - Lynne Reid Banks. Two tigers in ancient Rome are captured; one becomes the pet of Caesar's daughter while the other is trained to be a killer.

Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916 - Michael Capuzzo. In 1916, mass hysteria grips the Jersey coast with a shark terrorizes the shoreline.

Prom Nights from Hell - Meg Cabot. As if prom isn't stressful enough. Just imagine having a demon show up for the dance of the Grim Reaper as your date.

All Hallows Eve (13 Stories) - Vivian Vande Velde. Keep the lights on! Halloween is given a whole new dimension of delicious terror in these horror stories.

Gil's All Fright Diner - A. Lee Martinez. When Earl, a vampire, and his werewolf buddy Duke pull up to Rockwood's only diner in their out-of-gas pickup, they find themselves uniquely suited to stop Armageddon.

Vampire High - Douglas Rees. Fifteen-year-old Cody Elliot is the new guy in school and one of the only non-vampires to be seen. Follow Cody's hilarious journey adjusting to life and classes at Vlad Dracul.

Teens Cook - Megan Carle and Jill Carle. Make the food you want to munch on.

Death Note: Volume 1 Boredom - Tsugumi Ohba. Light Yagami is an intelligent high school student who is bored out of his mind. When he finds a Death Note dropped by a Shinigami death god, he vows to rid the world of evil.

Cirque de Freak - Darren Shan. Darren Shan visits an illegal freak show, where an encounter with a vampire and a deadly spider forces him to make life-changing choices.

Blue Bloods: Masquerade - Melissa de la Cruz - A popular makes Schuylar Van Alen feel like an outsider. However, she will become a vampire at age 15 with new enemies.

Feed - M.T. Anderson. A digital chip in your brain - can Titus fight the Feed?

Tunnels - Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. Will's dad has disappeared into a subterranean society that time forgot. Tapping into his passion for archaeology, Will has to free him from the creepy Colony.

Find more suggested reads at the library! Don't forget, if Wood Library doesn't have the book, we can order for you from another library!
volunTEENS WANTED!

Have a community service requirement you have to fulfill for school? Or, maybe you just want to help out? Well, Wood Library has many volunteer opportunities available for teens. I need your help with:

Library Fundraiser Committees:
In the Library Fundraiser Committees, teens in grades 9-12 meet once a month to brainstorm and organize various events to help fund Wood Library!

  • Podcasts:
Teens (13-17) wanted to write book, poetry, music, or movie reviews and then create a podcast to be posted on the teen blog. Or, help with the technical portion of the podcast. The more, the better!

  • Displays & Signage:
Teens (12-17) can create displays and signs for specific events. See Jenny for signs or displays needed and to schedule a time to work.

  • Shelf Sitter:
Adopt a shelf! Teens (12-17) will “read” the shelves of a section of the library to make sure books are in order, and will wash book covers, tape torn pages, and set aside books in need of major repair. No set schedule.
