Game Night

The monthly Game Nights that you thirsted for since Halloween Game Night are back at Wood Library! On Thursday, January 28 from 6:00-8:30 PM, challenge other teens to strategy board games like Last Night on Earth, Blockus, or Pueblo. Game Nights are held on the last Thursday of every month and led by Canandaigua Middle School Teacher John Michalko. For grades 8 and up. Who ever thought that going old school could be so much fun? Join other teens right in the comfort of your local library as we discuss great young adult titles that really make you think! Hot drinks and treats based on the book guaranteed at every meeting. Lovin' Your Oven

It’s the 4th Annual Lovin’ Your Oven! Your mission: To bake the best darn cookies that Canandaigua has ever tasted. Your goal: To be named Canandaigua’s Best Teen Baker for 2010 and win a $50 gift card to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, a $25 Wegmans gift card, or a $10 gift certificate to Phoenix Coffee. Three local tasters will decide your fate as they vote on their favorite cookie based on flavor, texture, taste, and presentation. What You Need to Do: Register at Wood Library, bake your famous cookies and bring them and the recipe* to Wood Library on Saturday, January 16 from 11:45AM – 1:30PM (Judging begins at noon). *Recipes will be available for purchase to help raise money for Wood Library. View an Anime film that was selected as one of the best 5 Anime movies by Time Magazine - Barefoot Gen. Gen is a cheerful elementary school student living in Japan during World War II. After years of living with difficult wartime rationing and impoverished conditions, Gen and his family have managed to maintain a relatively normal and happy life. All that is about to change when an atomic bomb destroys their city in an instant. While Gen and his mother manage to survive the attack, the rest of their family is not so lucky. Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion, 151 Charlotte St., CanandaiguaAs the official kick-off for The Big Read, historic Sonnenberg Mansion is the perfect place for a masquerade ball to honor Edgar Allan Poe! The lights will dim as dramatic readings of Poe’s major works, including “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” are chillingly delivered by state officials and other community members to a captivated audience. Students from Canandaigua Academy’s Drama Department will play Poe’s troubled characters including Fortunato, Roderick Usher, and Prince Prospero, and Poe himself will make an appearance. Guests will be challenged to guess the characters and Poe’s stories or poems. Costumes will be judged and prizes awarded. Teens and adults are invited to this ticketed, catered event. Tickets can be purchased at Wood Library for $8/person. RSVP by September 30.

A Writer’s Nightmare: Teen Horror Writing Workshop

Main St., CanandaiguaTeens can perfect their horror writing skills with John Michalko, Special Projects Teacher at Canandaigua Middle School, as they look at popular horror writers from the past and present and discuss what creates a truly horrifying read. Poe Panel Discussion

Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., CanandaiguaWood Library will host a discussion surrounding the stories and poetry, the author, the history, and the dark themes of Edgar Allan Poe. Kathi Nacca, retired Canandaigua Academy English Teacher and Wood Library employee, will moderate a panel of Poe experts as they discuss “The Bells,” “The Raven,” and a selection of short stories. Panel speakers include Sam Martina, Scott Schauman, and Bob Burns. Students studying the work for the first time and adults revisiting it are encouraged to join in the discussion. Free and open to all ages.

A Midnight Dreary: Tales of Edgar Allan Poe

Veterans Hospital, 400 Fort Hill Ave., CanandaiguaBristol Valley Theatre collaborates with Wood Library and The Big Read to celebrate the 200th birthday of America's Master of the Macabre, in a dramatic performance of Edgar Allan Poe's most haunting tales, featuring BVT’s Artistic Director Karin Bowersock and local actor Jim Ditmars. Ditmars has been with Bristol Valley Theater since 1995 and is no stranger to dramatic macabre. He has appeared in “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Corpse!,” and the world premiere of “Nevermore.” Students from Canandaigua Academy will grace the stage and treat the audience to period Gothic choral pieces. Performances are free and open to the public. The event will be held at the Veteran's Administration Auditorium in Building #5. Parking nearby.
